Claude Code: switch off idle compaction
Want long chats left alone while you’re away? A new Idle compaction row in /config turns that feature off or back on, and the notice after an idle compaction now says how.
Also changed: fork subagents are on by default in claude -p, the Agent SDK, the desktop app and VS Code, as they already were in the terminal.
In plain English
Idle compaction is now yours to switch off. Open /config and use the Idle compaction row to turn it off, or back on later. The notices shown after an idle compaction also tell you how to turn it off.
Fork subagents in more places
Fork subagents are now on by default in claude -p, the Agent SDK, the desktop app and VS Code, as they already are in the terminal. Set CLAUDE_ to turn them off.
The desktop app and VS Code also now always run the main conversation’s subagents in the background, as the terminal does.
Scripts on third-party providers
claude -p and Agent SDK sessions with no permission mode now start in default mode on third-party providers, with telemetry off or on a fresh install. Pass --permission-mode auto to keep auto mode.
