Claude Code chats fit smaller context windows

Switch to a model with a smaller context window and Claude Code makes the chat fit. A conversation too long for the new model is now summarized by the previous model first, and a fix covers a case where that summary could spend usage credits without asking.

Unattended retry mode can now also give up on a usage limit that resets too far away.

In plain English

Moving a long chat to a model with a smaller context window? Starting with Claude Code v2.1.301, the model you switch away from condenses any conversation the new one can’t hold. A related fix closes a case where making that condensed version could use usage credits without your OK.

For unattended runs

If you use unattended retry mode (CLAUDE_CODE_RETRY_WATCHDOG), the new CLAUDE_CODE_RETRY_WATCHDOG_MAX_USAGE_LIMIT_WAIT_MS setting ends a request at a usage limit that resets too far away, instead of waiting for it.

Also in this release

  • Quitting no longer removes a worktree made by a WorktreeCreate hook without asking when it may hold unpushed commits.
  • Grep and Glob now return an error when the search fails, instead of reporting no matches.
  • In VS Code, Claude’s responses now render LaTeX math.

To get it, update Claude Code to v2.1.301 or later.
