Copilot retires three models Nov 16
Action needed: three Copilot models retire Nov 16, 2026. Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Terra leave every Copilot experience. Move to Claude Opus 5.5 or GPT-6.1 Sol (or GPT-6 Luna) before your workflows find out the hard way. Individual annual plans keep Opus 4.8.
In plain English
Three older Copilot models retire on Nov 16, 2026. If you use one, switch now.
What’s retiring
GitHub deprecates these models across all Copilot experiences, including Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions:
- Claude Opus 4.8 → suggested: Claude Opus 5.5
- Claude Opus 5 → suggested: Claude Opus 5.5
- GPT-5.6 Terra → suggested: GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Luna
One exception: individual Copilot subscribers on annual plans keep Claude Opus 4.8.
What to do
- Pick the suggested model in the Copilot Chat model selector, and update any workflows or integrations that name the old models.
- Admins on Copilot Business or Enterprise: under default model enablement, the alternatives are switched on automatically, unless you turned off the global default or disabled the model. In that case, enable them in the model policies in Copilot settings.
- Nothing needs cleaning up afterward: the old models go away on their own.
