Claude Code subagents get their own memory budget

Give each subagent its own memory budget. The latest Claude Code release adds autoCompactWindow to subagent definitions, so a subagent can compact earlier than the main chat. A new variable runs every workflow agent on one model.

In plain English

A busy helper agent no longer has to fill up the same big memory as your main chat before it tidies up.

Subagents are helper agents that Claude Code hands parts of a task to. In the latest release you can add autoCompactWindow to a subagent’s frontmatter or to --agents definitions. The subagent then auto-compacts (summarises its own history to save space) earlier than the main conversation does.

Also in this release

  • CLAUDE_CODE_WORKFLOW_SUBAGENT_MODEL runs every workflow agent on one model, while other subagents keep theirs.
  • CLAUDE_CODE_OVERLOADED_RETRY_MAX_DELAY_MS sets a longer maximum wait between retries of an overloaded (529) request.
  • The Read tool gets an allow_large option, so Claude can read a text file past the usual size limit in one call when it needs the whole file.
  • Managed-settings PreToolUse hooks that deny a call with "continue": false now end the turn as intended.

What to do

Update Claude Code, then add autoCompactWindow to the subagents that tend to run long.
