Four tiny ChatGPT chores on a timer

 · ~5 min read

Four little chores, zero babysitting: ChatGPT punches in on schedule. Set them once and they ping you on time, so you stop rechecking the same tabs and stretching five-minute breaks. Hats off to Judy Sanhz for turning everyday chores into a recipe anyone can copy, plus a fancier version.

🧾 What’s cooking

  • Why: by her account, five-minute breaks kept turning into long ones, and she kept losing track of what she’d been doing.
  • The dish: ChatGPT scheduled tasks, saved jobs that run at a set time and send you a notification (OpenAI Help: scheduled tasks in ChatGPT).
  • Her four tasks:
    • a five-minute break reminder
    • an evening digest of the five biggest stories on topics she follows, with sources
    • a morning rundown of the day’s calendar, with overlaps and free blocks
    • a watch on one product link that speaks up only at her target price
  • Secret ingredient: tell each task what to skip and when to stay quiet. She asked her digest to leave out minor updates and repeated news.

🛒 Ingredients

👩‍🍳 Method A: no code

  1. Turn on notifications first: Settings → Notifications, then Push, Email, or both. If your browser blocks them, ChatGPT shows a notice; select Allow (OpenAI Help: scheduled tasks in ChatGPT). Her first reminder slipped past because notifications were off.
  2. Ask for the job in a chat, time included, like the prompt below. ChatGPT shows a confirmation once the task exists. You can also start from the Scheduled page (OpenAI Help: scheduled tasks in ChatGPT).
  3. Be specific, as she suggests: the topics, how far back to look, how many results, and what to leave out.
  4. Want phone alerts? Create the task in a supported ChatGPT mobile app and allow notifications when asked (OpenAI Help: scheduled tasks in ChatGPT).
Every weekday at <evening time>, find the five biggest stories from the past 24 hours about <topic 1> and <topic 2>.
One sentence each, with a source link and why people are talking about it.
Skip minor updates and repeats of the same story.
Nothing big today? Say "quiet day".

👩‍🍳 Method B: fancier

  1. Price watch: ask ChatGPT to keep an eye on one product link and speak up only at your price. Monitoring tasks check for changes, notify you about a relevant update, can use what earlier runs found, and stop when a defined end condition is met (OpenAI Help: scheduled tasks in ChatGPT). So give it an end condition.
  2. Calendar rundown: connect your calendar in Settings → Plugins, if that app is available for your account (OpenAI Help: connected apps in ChatGPT). Scheduled tasks can use supported apps when they’re available to you (OpenAI Help: scheduled tasks in ChatGPT). She used Google Calendar for her morning rundown.
  3. Exact times and hourly runs need an eligible paid plan. On Free, a task runs at most once a day, in a flexible window like morning or night (OpenAI Help: scheduled tasks in ChatGPT).
  4. Swap recipes with a friend: Scheduled → ••• → Share → Copy link. The link carries the title, instructions, schedule and original time zone, not your chats, memories, files or app data. They schedule their own copy (OpenAI Help: scheduled tasks in ChatGPT).
  5. In the ChatGPT desktop app, a custom cadence can use a recurrence rule, such as a run on the first of each month (ChatGPT Learn: scheduled tasks).
Keep an eye on <product link>. Stay quiet unless the price is <target> or less.
When it is, send me the current price and the link, then stop watching.

😋 Taste test

  • Runs land in Scheduled. There you can review results and schedules, or pause, resume, edit and delete a task. In a chat, select the task title to open its panel (OpenAI Help: scheduled tasks in ChatGPT).
  • Try the prompt in a regular chat first, then read the first few runs and tighten it (ChatGPT Learn: scheduled tasks).
  • Her report, not checked by us: the digest and the calendar rundown arrived on time, and a task she set up on her computer also reached her phone. OpenAI’s help says mobile push needs a task created in a supported mobile app. If your phone stays silent, start the task there.
